Enclosed CAT 800 kW generator with sub-base fuel tank

Cost & FAQ

What does it really cost?

There's no honest one-number answer. Here's what moves the price, and how to get a real number fast.

What drives

The price.

  • Amperage. 100, 200, 400 amps and up.
  • Service-entrance rated or not. Whole-home switches that replace the main disconnect cost more.
  • Indoor or outdoor. Outdoor enclosures cost more and wear faster.
  • Wiring changes. Moving the switch, longer runs or a new sub-panel add labor.
  • Load management. Smart switches and load-shed modules add parts.
  • Commercial ratings. Withstand rating, transition type and bypass-isolation.
  • Permit and inspection. Included in the written quote.

FAQ

Straight answers.

What does an automatic transfer switch do?

It watches utility power. When utility power drops, it tells the generator to start, then moves your load to the generator. When utility power comes back, it moves the load back and lets the generator cool down and shut off.

How do I know my transfer switch is the problem and not the generator?

If the generator starts and runs but the lights stay off, or the power comes back and the generator keeps running, the switch or its control wiring is the first suspect. We test both before quoting.

Can you repair it instead of replacing it?

Often, yes. Contactors, control boards, solenoids and lugs can be replaced on many switches. We'll give you a repair price and a replacement price when both make sense.

How much does transfer switch replacement cost?

It depends on amperage, residential or commercial, indoor or outdoor, service-entrance rating, and how much wiring changes. We give a written quote after we see the switch.

Do you work on every brand?

We service ASCO, Thomson, Generac, Kohler, Eaton, Cummins, Briggs & Stratton, Champion, Zenith, Russelectric, Caterpillar, Siemens, Square D, Reliance, Westinghouse and others. We are an independent service company and are not claiming to be a factory-authorized dealer for these brands.

Do you pull permits?

Yes. Transfer switch replacement is electrical work and needs a permit and inspection in most jurisdictions. Permits and inspections are handled by the licensed electrician on your job and included in the written quote.

How long does a replacement take?

Most residential switch replacements are a one-day job once the part is on site. Commercial work is scheduled around your outage window.

Can I upgrade a manual switch or interlock to automatic?

Yes. If you have a standby generator, we can add an automatic switch. If you have a portable, we can quote a standby generator and switch together.
